Rafique Wassan

Rafique Wassan is a trained anthropologist from Pakistan and currently a PhD candidate in Walter Benjamin Kolleg’s the Graduate School of Humanities – Interdisciplinary Cultural Studies, University of Bern, Switzerland. His interdisciplinary PhD research project focuses on the contemporary progressive-pluralist cultural production and politics of Sufi heritage discourse and performance in Sindh, Pakistan. Previously, he worked with participatory research study projects in The Aga Khan University Karachi and taught anthropology with specific focus on Anthropology of South Asia at the Department of Anthropology and Archaeology, University of Sindh, Jamshoro, Pakistan. His research methodology and interests focus on engaged humanities practice in South Asia, critical cultural traditions, artistic and music expressions, anthropology of Islam, gender, human rights and peace studies. In 2015, he participated in a study workshop ‘anti-democratic movements, governance and public policy’ held in Germany organised by DAAD funded by German Federal Foreign Office. In 2017 and 2018, he convened international conferences on Sufi heritage in Karachi, Sindh Pakistan organised by Sindh Culture, Tourism and Antiquities Department.
